All drivers in the United States need to have a license and must be able to show proof of auto insurance, but some motorists are in a situation where they cannot afford premiums. Because driving without insurance is not an option, Maryland residents may be eligible for coverage through the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF). MAIF is a governmental agency that offers insurance for any Maryland resident who has been turned down by the private insurance companies.
MAIF Insurance is available to any driver who owns or leases a car that is registered in Maryland. In order to receive coverage, drivers must demonstrate that they have been turned down by at least two private companies because of their driving record or any other factor other than falling behind on their payments.
With MAIF Insurance, drivers can choose from a range of different liability levels and make sure that they have the bare minimum financial protection. In Maryland, the minimum liability coverage is, “30/50/15.” This means that drivers need to have $30,000 that covers bodily injury for each person, $60,000 insurance for total bodily injuries and $15,000 that offers financial protection for any property damage that occurs as a result of an accident. This is the cheapest legal option under the MAIF program, but drivers can also choose more expensive premiums that offer coverage up to $100,000 for a single bodily injury or property damage and $300,000 for the total bodily injuries in a single accident.
Designed to provide protection to drivers who cannot find other insurance, MAIF does not turn down drivers because of prior driving records, but the agency does ask about the issue when applicants first enroll. In addition, a driver’s record may be a factor in a person’s insurance premiums. That being said, the policy is especially made to help drivers with poor driving histories. The coverage is an ideal option for those with prior accidents, multiple traffic violations or DUIs. If you live in Maryland, you may be able to ensure you are financially protected with MAIF Insurance.
