Safe Driving Leads to Lower Premiums

As families begin to head to the beach this summer, local drivers will see increased congestion on the road. More travelers will cause heavy traffic and it is important to be a safe driver and keep frustration levels low. Remember- drive safe to save money on your MAIF insurance premiums!

It is also important to make sure you are covered before hitting the road. The Maryland Auto Insurance Fund insures any driver, regardless of driving history. Make sure to stay alert and make safe driving decisions this summer. Here are some safe driving tips for typical summer road conditions.

Summer Road Trip Driving Tips

A great way to avoid traffic is by planning your travel times around peak hours. Between 7:00 to 9:00 am and 5:00 to 7:00 pm during the typical workweek are times it is best to avoid major highways. Drivers may also be stuck in traffic on Saturdays because of those traveling to and from the beach. Avoiding popular cities during peak times is also a great way to dodge road congestion. Traveling a few extra miles around a city may actually save you time.

Traffic jams may cause frustration but aggressive driving is unsafe– and often the cause of accidents that will increase your monthly insurance bill. If you find yourself stuck in congestion, constantly scan traffic and road conditions. Use your vehicle’s mirrors to monitor the areas around your car. When you are approaching a crowded section of the road, take your foot off the accelerator and coast forward. This will allow friction to slow your car, while saving you gas. It is also important to save room between your car and the car in front of you for emergency breaking.

Communication between other drivers and yourself is always critical, but especially in congested traffic. Do not weave in and out of congestion in attempts to get ahead because this will only increase frustrations. If you do need to merge, use your turn signals to let other drivers around you know what you’re about to do and to help prepare their course of action.
