Stop For School Buses: It Pays To Be A Safe Driver

Summer is ending and the new school year is right around the corner. Soon school buses will be picking up students, parents will be dropping kids off, and students will be walking and riding their bikes to class.

Stop For School Buses And Save Money

The Maryland Auto Insurance Provider wants to remind our drivers that Maryland law requires all drivers to stop for school buses that are picking up and dropping off students. This applies to both lanes of traffic, not just the cars behind the bus.

Stopping for a school bus is important for the safety of children who may be crossing the road to catch the bus. If you are following a school bus, leave extra traveling space to be prepared for a stop. Remember a driver must stop at least 20 feet away from the school bus in either direction and wait until the bus has started moving before resuming driving your own vehicle. It is also important to allow for extra time during your morning commute.

Maryland imposes strict fines and points for drivers who do not stop for a slowing or stopped school bus. Local police will be on the lookout for drivers, especially those in the opposite lane, to stop for buses. Some local jurisdictions have even installed video cameras on their school buses to record drivers who pass them on the road. If a driver fails to stop, an offending motorist will have 3 points added to their driver’s license.

It pays to stop for a school bus because a clean driving record is the best way to save and reduce your MAIF insurance premium. MAIF is committed to helping drivers establish and maintain a safe driving record.
