What To Know About A Provisional License In Maryland

Being a teenager and learning to drive can be one of the most exciting times of your young life; however, it must be done the proper way. During the process of obtaining your license for the first time in Maryland, you will hear the term ‘Provisional License‘ early on in the process.

Once you pass the Maryland driver skills test, you will then obtain a provisional license which will enable you to gain experience as a driver without supervision. However, there will be restrictions put in place on your provisional license. We are going to go over the requirements for this license, and the restrictions that come with a provisional license.

How long do I need to have a provisional license?

  • Once you have your provisional license, you must maintain a clean driving record for 18 months before you are eligible for a full unrestricted driver’s license in Maryland.

What Requirements Must I Meet To Obtain My Provisional License?

  • Must complete the classroom and behind-the-wheel course of the Maryland driver’s education program with an approved school.
  • The minimum age to obtain a provisional license is 16 years and 6 months old.
  • Must complete the requirements for a learner’s permit with no convictions or probations before judgment for the required time period.

What Restrictions Are Placed While I Hold A Provisional License?

These restrictions are very important as if you are caught driving and violating the restrictions that come with your provisional license, your 18 month period will start over, and depending on the violation, you may even lose your provisional license altogether.

  • Of course, you may not drive with any measurable amount of alcohol in your system.
  • If you are under the age of 18, you may not drive with passengers under the age of 18, unless they are an immediate family member.
  • You may not drive between midnight, and 5 am unless of the following occurs:
    • You are with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has been licensed for at least 3 years.
