What To Know: Federal Real ID Program & If It Will Effect Your License

What Is The Federal Real ID Program?

It is a program that was passed after the September 11 terrorist attacks that occurred in the United States to help create standards for secure driver’s license and identification cards across the country.

The state of Maryland has over 5 million drivers with either a license or identification card, and according to the Motor Vehicle Authority, less than half of these license or identification holders have the necessary Real ID documents on file.

What Happens If I Do Not Provide The Required Documentation?

Your driver’s license will be recalled and no longer valid, although you will still have driving privileges unless you have had a driving infraction that would lead to suspension. However, your license will be confiscated if you are stopped by law enforcement while it is recalled.

Also, as of October 1, 2020, your license will be required to have the Real ID star on it to board an airplane or enter any federal facility.

How Do I Know If I Will Be Impacted?

Drivers can check their Real ID status at www.mva.maryland.gov/realidlookup

If you are to be impacted by the new federal requirement, we urge you to contact your local MVA office and learn which documents that you need to provide to ensure that your license does not become invalidated by the state of Maryland.

What Documents Will Be Required?

Of course, each person is different, but the required documents can include any of the following:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Original Social Security Card
  • At least two documents that prove you are a Maryland resident such as a utility bill.
