Winterize Your Vehicle in Maryland

How to Winterize Your Vehicle

Follow these tips to winterize your car and prevent problems due to colder temperatures:

Check Fluid Levels

Ensure that your car has enough oil and coolant before winter. Add antifreeze and an equal part of water to your car. Antifreeze keeps your engine running in the cold by lowering the temperature so that water can freeze. Cleaning snow and ice off of your windshield can lower wiper fluid levels. Making sure you have enough wiper fluid can prevent problems seeing the road and other vehicles.

Check Wiper Blades

Make sure that your wiper blades are in good shape. Get replacements if you have streaks or film on your window from the blades. If the weather is calling for ice or snow, place your wiper blades up to remove buildup. Placing your wiper blades up also makes it easier to clean the front window of your vehicle.

Inspect Tires

Colder weather affects your tire pressure. Tire pressure can go down one pound per square inch (psi) for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Use a tire pressure gauge and make that all of your tires are around the same pressure. On average, cars have a psi of 32 to 35.

Check Your Air Filter and Battery

A dirty air filter can prevent warm air from circulating in your car. Snow and ice can negatively affect your car battery. Cold weather can decrease your battery power. If it takes time for your car to start, it may be time for a battery replacement.

Make an Emergency Kit

It’s always helpful to create an emergency kit to keep in your car at all times, especially during winter. You never know if you’ll need these tools in an emergency:

  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire inflator
  • Flashlight
  • Tire patch kit
  • Ice scraper and brush
  • Road flares
  • Triangle reflectors
  • First aid kit
  • Phone charger
  • Water and snacks
