Maryland’s Minimum Coverage vs. Full Coverage: What’s the Real Difference for Your Wallet?

Shopping for car insurance in Maryland can feel like learning a foreign language. Liability. Collision. Comprehensive. Uninsured motorist. It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. So, should you get the state minimum coverage, or should you go for full coverage? The answer depends on a few things, but let’s break down what each one actually means for your wallet.

Maryland's Minimum Coverage vs. Full Coverage MAIF

What Maryland’s Minimum Coverage Actually Covers

Maryland law requires every driver to carry liability insurance. That coverage pays for damage and injuries you cause to someone else in an accident. The state minimums are:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury per person
  • $60,000 for bodily injury per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage per accident

That’s it. That’s the legal minimum to drive in Maryland. It covers the other driver’s medical bills and car repairs, but it doesn’t cover your vehicle or your injuries.

If you cause an accident and the other driver’s injuries total $40,000, your policy only pays $30,000. You’re on the hook for the other $10,000 out of pocket. The same goes if you damage someone’s luxury SUV and the repair bill hits $20,000; your $15,000 property damage limit won’t cover it all.

What Full Coverage Actually Means

“Full coverage” isn’t a real insurance term. It’s shorthand for having liability coverage plus two additional coverages: collision and comprehensive.

  • Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your own vehicle if it’s damaged in an accident, no matter who caused it.
  • Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your vehicle from things other than a crash; think theft, vandalism, fire, hail, or hitting a deer.

Together, these two coverages protect your own vehicle. That’s what most people mean by “full coverage.”

The Cost Difference

Minimum coverage is cheaper. There’s no way around that. It’s the lowest legal option, so the premiums are lower. But the question isn’t just about the monthly payment. It’s about what happens when something goes wrong.

Say you have minimum coverage and you total your car in an accident that’s your fault. Your policy pays nothing for your vehicle. You’re left with a wrecked car and no check from the insurance company. If you still owe money on a car loan, you’re still paying for a car you can’t drive.

With collision and comprehensive coverage, your insurance would pay to replace that vehicle (minus the deductible). That’s a big difference.

Who Should Choose Minimum Coverage?

Minimum coverage makes sense for some drivers:

  • People with older cars that aren’t worth much
  • Drivers who own their vehicle outright
  • Anyone on a very tight budget who needs the lowest possible premium

If your car is only worth $2,000, paying for collision coverage might not make financial sense. The annual premium could be more than the car’s value.

Who Should Choose Full Coverage?

Full coverage makes more sense for:

  • Drivers with newer or more valuable vehicles
  • Anyone with a car loan or lease (lenders usually require it)
  • People who couldn’t afford to replace their car out of pocket

If you’d struggle to come up with thousands of dollars for a replacement car, full coverage offers protection that minimum coverage doesn’t.

Making the Right Call

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the minimum-versus-full-coverage question. It comes down to the vehicle’s value, the driver’s budget, and how much risk feels comfortable. The important thing is to make an informed choice, not just grab the cheapest option without thinking it through.
